On June 19, 2018, Shelly Garzon, as co-defense counsel with the physician’s attorney, won a unanimous defense verdict in a wrongful death case where plaintiff claimed the cardiothoracic surgeon employed by her client, a health care system, was negligent in deciding to perform a triple bypass surgery on the decedent without completely working up various other health issues before surgery.  Plaintiff asked for an award in the range of $19 million. The defense showed that the surgeon conducted a thorough pre-operative work-up and that surgery was reasonable and necessary to address decedent’s severe heart disease.  The jury agreed that the surgeon provided reasonably prudent care and returned a verdict in his favor.
